17:05:35<@EggplantN>EZ
17:08:41<SCSi>heh
17:09:10<Wayward>fire extinguishers are nice to have. it ought to be criminal that exploding fire extinguisher balls aren't available on store shelves, just because they contain tiny amount of black powder.
17:09:26<Wayward>set it and forget it
17:09:58<SCSi>a binary compound that releases a ton of CO2 and napalm like extinguisher
17:10:02<Wayward>probably cheap to build yourself.
17:10:06<SCSi>but then you'd see people throwing them at pets like pokeballs
17:10:30<@EggplantN>honestly
17:10:37<@EggplantN>if i could buy one off the shelf
17:10:48<@EggplantN>it would be great fun when drunk and playing fire cricket in france
17:10:54<Wayward>SCSi, we used to prosecute people for committed crimes, and actually carry out punishments... instead of just saying "whoopsy doodle. we didn't take away freedoms hard enough."
17:11:03<SCSi>i know
17:11:09<SCSi>its retarded as hell
17:11:37<SCSi>do bad stuff, get a slap on the wrist
17:11:49<SCSi>any law abiding person does the same thing, 100 years punishment
17:11:50<Wayward>but even normal fire extinguishers. as an avid police scanner listen-toer, i can vouch that nobody but I own these devices.
17:12:09<SCSi>oh i own fire extinguishers at home
17:12:10<SCSi>and at work
17:12:38<AK>We don't have one here at home (UK)
17:13:26<SCSi>are you not trusted with them?
17:13:29<Wayward>1 in each bedroom, 2 in the kitchen, living room, garage/workshop, and another one at each entrance/exit. in plain view, not hidden in cabinetry
17:14:01<Wayward>either 5 or 10 lb
17:14:01<AK>I don't think I've ever seen one at home, or know of anyone who has them here
17:14:54<SCSi>i want to get one for my truck
17:14:59<SCSi>like one that you mount under the drivers seat
17:15:23<SCSi>fires are one of those things that if they happen, you're sorta fucked
17:15:29<Wayward>oh yeah, and 2 in the car. under the driver seat and in the trunk. shake them every couple months because the powder sets and clumps like pancake batter.
17:16:19<SCSi>got a brand you really really like or had good luck with?
17:16:37<SCSi>we have General's here at the store, and the one time i used it.. it worked
17:16:58<Wayward>They're all the same. Except you ought to get ones with metal a metal handle, not a plastic handle. that's a 99% indicator that it uses a metal valve not a plastic valve.
17:17:06<SCSi>good to know
17:17:24<Wayward>let's see. First Alert, Badger,
17:17:25<SCSi>we also have a store account with the local extinguisher recharge place
17:17:39<SCSi>they top ours off every few years when the tag says its time to be looked at
17:18:49<Wayward>really, if they're shipped+sold by Amazon, and cost $65, then that's the one to get.
17:19:09<Wayward>or your local big box store
17:20:54<Wayward>I also pick them up in bulk whenever there's a commercial entity that gets rid of them all, because they're required to swap out extinguishers every 6 years, and usually pay $5 instead, then make sure everyone I know has one.
17:21:32<SCSi>oh good point
17:21:53<SCSi>yeah, fire extinguishers in home/car are really underappreciated
17:21:56<SCSi>until you need them
17:22:02<Wayward>I've used 3
17:22:10<Wayward>(on other people)
17:22:17<SCSi>oh crap
17:22:26<SCSi>ive only used 1 on a car fire in the parking lot
17:22:42<SCSi>didnt really do much tbh
17:22:43<Wayward>2 times from a catolitic dry grass/brush fire
17:23:13<SCSi>here in california they should be mandatory at all gender reveal parties
17:23:20<SCSi>cuz well, states on fire
17:23:41<Wayward>one dude in my old apt complex had an entire nest of leaves packed under his car that sat for months and months, and he decided to start it up one day and it caught fire
17:25:11<Wayward>i honestly can't understand or appreciate the whole gender reveal death toll thing. and i'm completely pro-pyromania
17:25:20<SCSi>oh i love fire and blowing shit up
17:25:32<SCSi>which is a bad thing to have when you reload ammo for a hobby
17:25:33<Wayward>the idiocy seems artificially extreme like it's all made up gas lighting
17:25:56<Wayward>but then i remember we also have a slew of deaths from tannerite and refrigerators
17:26:17<SCSi>oh, random unknown powder cuz i didnt write down what i put in the powder thrower? Come on kids! time to make a line and see what happens
17:27:25<Wayward>the closest i got to that was age ~12, i lit a random fuse in my hands i picked up from the ground of a parking lot. instead of 10 seconds a foot, it was 0.01 seconds a foot
17:27:40<Wayward>got a nice scorchy
17:28:13<Wayward>mostly likely fell out of the sky from some mortor display
17:29:41<SCSi>ive only shot tannerite once
17:29:45<SCSi>cuz its illegal in cali
17:29:53<SCSi>it was.... anticlimatic

17:32:52<atphoenix>I have fire extinguishers. Not as many as Wayward I guess. But some. Where do you find those bulk discounted sales?
17:33:39<Wayward>atphoenix: when we had open air flea markets. hopefully they come back.
17:35:26<Wayward>the kind where there are 20 tow trailers with crap from storage lockers
17:35:29<atphoenix>if a building has a working sprinkler system, I guess an extinguisher is less important. US also has a lot of wood buildings (5+ story too).
17:38:31<SCSi>well
17:38:45<SCSi>sprinklers have a lot of colleratal damage
17:38:52<atphoenix>I haven't been to a flea market in years.
17:39:10<SCSi>you dont want a fire to get out of hand to set the sprinklers off
17:39:23<atphoenix>Fires = more damage. I'd rather my stuff be wet than ash.
17:39:42<SCSi>but an extinguisher can eliminate the threat before it gets out of hand
17:39:46<Wayward>i used to have them just 2 streets down from me in an open lot, so I'd just wander there every friday morning.
17:39:47<atphoenix>and firefighter hoses mean a hell of a lot more water than sprinklers
17:40:05<SCSi>once it gets out of hand, or you find it in a state where you cant take it out with a FE, then sprinklers work well
17:40:10<atphoenix>layers of defense are good
17:40:13<SCSi>yes
17:40:46<SCSi>grease fires are like the bane of the uneducated
17:41:07<SCSi>fire = water
17:41:09<SCSi>nope
17:41:27<atphoenix>grease fire + water = spread fire!
17:41:53<Wayward>SCSi, this wasn't the first time either, but just a couple weeks ago I listened as my fire dept dispatched a call for "owner says it's just a small fire and he thinks he got it out, but he wants fire to give him assistance."
17:42:27<Wayward>within 5 minutes, police arrived on scene first and said the house was already half engulfed, and spread to the garage and the car was starting to catch
17:42:44<Wayward>and the dude was filling a bucket of water from his tub

20:06:12<@Kaz>it exists yes
20:07:01<atphoenix>Wayward, yes, I've seen blog entries about people doing connection bonding in home labs
20:07:25<Wayward>is it pretty out of reach?
20:09:46<@JAA>It's called link aggregation and is fairly well-supported I believe.
20:10:56<Wayward>++
20:13:33<atphoenix>you can use search terms such as ethernet bonding/NIC aggregation/NIC teaming to find articles for doing it on Linux and Windows

20:16:53<@Kaz>ezpz
20:17:49<Wayward>doesn't look as cool as a bundle of 24 cat6 cables running down the hallway all belted together
20:23:11<atphoenix>strictly speaking, the network switch you use could limit performance, if it can't handle said amount of simultaneous traffic. I mean the switch could have 24x 1 Gbps ports, but internally due to a design bottleneck only be able to handle 12 Gbps of traffic moving between the ports not 24 Gbps. I remember seeing some gear literature that implied that other devices like that existed. A scenario for that could be what is externally a
20:23:12<atphoenix>24 port switch that internally is really two 13 port switches with say an internal link (that is <12 Gbps) between the two halves.
20:24:14LeGoupil joins
20:24:56<Wayward>i figure that's the default scenario until you get into pricy equipment.
20:33:34<atphoenix>Paralleling connections is reasonable up to some limit where the extra hardware required either is more expensive than simply using inherently faster NICs and/or you run out of expansion slots on either end and/or run out of cables between the ends. Also the configuration complexity is a factor. Parallel connections can give you failover benefits.
