11:08:14<steering>BlankEclair: she would need them to cosign :/
11:08:43<steering>I mean, or commit identity theft or probably some sort of money laundering crime for using an international bank
11:09:47<steering>emancipation is likely unavailable https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/FA/htm/FA.31.htm#31.001
11:11:36<steering>("self-supporting and managing the minor's own financial affairs" tends to be difficult without a bank account or especially ID)
11:12:13<BlankEclair>bootstrapping problem...
11:12:53<steering>it was very difficult for me to get a bank account without an ID as a minor *with* my dad to cosign with me (and having an account himself at the same place - the IBM Texas employees credit union)
11:13:35<steering>(customer service insisted we could, the branch insisted we couldn't, eventually the branch allowed us to open it but put a hold on it and then we called customer service and they removed the hold)
11:14:19<steering>(and this was nearly 20 years ago... AML/KYC has only gotten stricter...)
11:14:28<steering>anyways, yes, indeed.
11:16:05<BlankEclair>i feel like the world is trying to get me to like the black market at this point lol
11:21:07<steering>BlankEclair: that said... not knowing anything about the situation... I would suggest she start by asking about getting a job? That would lead to an ID to get the job and a bank account to have somewhere to put her paychecks. Then once she's 17 she could look at emancipation, especially if she has a friend whose family would be willing to host her for rent or something (IANAL)
11:23:19<steering>that way she's "self-supporting and managing her own affairs" and need not be living apart from her parents (which would lead to runaway charges for her and harboring charges for whoever she was staying with). getting a place of her own, even emancipated, would also be basically impossible without someone to cosign.
11:23:30<steering>\o/ texas is great
11:24:21<BlankEclair>don't worry, she's also trans
11:24:53<BlankEclair>she got that 'having an 80% chance of having to buy necessary medication from the black market' debuff as well
11:25:00<steering>yup
11:25:12<BlankEclair>(well, 100% chance while she's < 18, but idk the situation in TX for those = 18 (or hell, even > 18))
11:25:25<steering>>=18
11:25:36<BlankEclair>at least TX doesn't sound as fucked then
11:25:53<steering>(I don't know it either but that's the only line relevant here)
11:26:17<steering>I'm pretty sure it's still 'just as available' as anywhere else in the US once you're 18
11:26:33<BlankEclair>she has $25 in cash
11:26:38<steering>for extra fun though once you're 17 you're no longer a minor for criminal purposes only
11:26:40<BlankEclair>i don't know if she has any other assets :p
11:27:22steering still has to disclose that one thing from when he was 17 every time he applies for a new job
11:27:28<BlankEclair>> [20/10/2025 22:26] <steering> I'm pretty sure it's still 'just as available' as anywhere else in the US once you're 18
11:27:29steering should probably pay a lawyer to get it sealed
11:27:55<BlankEclair>someone else i know (in her 20s iirc) is considering to DIY because she's moving to another state, and can't find an endo nearby that takes medicaid
11:27:58<BlankEclair>so y'know
11:28:01<BlankEclair>financial constraints as well
11:28:28<BlankEclair>and time, because i think she said that the endos she could find are like a 1-2h drive away?
11:28:39<steering>(for comparison i need not disclose the 2 things from when i was <17 because juvenile stuff is sealed automatically when you turn 17)
11:28:52<katia>r u a criminal
11:28:57<steering>technically
11:28:58<katia>IS THIS A SECURE LINE
11:29:02<steering>noo

11:29:20<BlankEclair>(is it illegal to buy and posses diy E2 in europe?)
11:29:22<BlankEclair>oh hell yeah
11:29:26<steering>BlankEclair: yeah and good luck finding one that will actually do what you need etc
11:30:17<BlankEclair>glad i'm in australia...
11:30:20<steering>it's not very good anywhere, at least not regionally. better in specific localities
11:30:31<BlankEclair>though we should still keep our eyes out
11:30:35<BlankEclair>(ahem, QLD and NT)
11:30:56<steering>I grew up in the Austin area which is quite liberal and I mean
11:31:45<steering>none of my trans friends complaints were about the availability of medical practitioners, although the affordability is another question
11:31:59<BlankEclair>the fact that y'all pay for your bloodwork is weird to me
11:32:12<steering>hmmmm depends
11:32:19<BlankEclair>oh?
11:32:43<steering>well, insurance if you have it will cover basic preventative care at 100%
11:32:52<BlankEclair>ah oki
11:33:00<steering>so if its associated with that it will be paid for
11:33:06<steering>(at least I believe)
11:33:15<BlankEclair>the fact that trans people in the US pay for their hrt bloodwork is weird to me
11:33:29<steering>well, they pay for everything :P
11:33:38<BlankEclair>bleh, trueeeeeeeeeeeeeee
11:33:49<BlankEclair>god, i can't wait to hear the GP costs
11:33:51<steering>if its not preventative there's basically always a deductible or copay or something
11:34:19<BlankEclair>standard appointments for mine are $105 total ($43.90 rebate), and long appts are $200 ($84.90 rebate)
11:34:33<steering>hmm, raw cost for "basic doctor visit" is usually like $70-100, probably more the upper end these days with inflation, i don't really go to the doctor
11:35:12<steering>cash at a place that accepts insurance will be higher, cash at a place that doesnt accept insurance will be lower, etc
11:35:36<steering>but then you'll also pay for any medications, any lab work, any imaging, any testing, etc
11:36:12<steering>(beyond like, basic vital signs and cheap/easy stuff the nurse can do instantly)
11:36:27<BlankEclair>i pay AU$20/month for my E2 pills
11:36:51FiTheArchiver joins

11:37:06<BlankEclair>(though i assume that you can get a ballpark?)
11:37:20<steering>technically, the info is out there
11:37:26<BlankEclair>oh?
11:37:29<steering>it's just difficult~impossible to find
11:37:34<BlankEclair>brilliant
11:37:55<steering>the insurer will have lists for all their plans somewhere on their website that define what drugs are in what tier for that plan. but you may not be able to figure out which list applies to you.
11:38:21<steering>and then those tiers will each have like a defined copay or coinsurance ($ or %) for your plan
11:38:49<steering>... but then you don't know what the pharmacy will charge if it was to be a % etc
11:39:15<steering>also theres oftentimes "discount programs" or rebates etc from the mfr, but sometimes they're only available to low-income or only to non-insured or etc...
11:39:40<steering>(we have paid cash for some meds because it was cheaper with the discount program than buying them under insurance)
11:40:13<BlankEclair>the fact that GoodRx exists and has a (seemingly) viable business model...
11:40:17<steering>yup
11:40:41<steering>also the amount you pay doesn't usually change
11:40:41<BlankEclair>fun fact: my E2 is cheap enough that it doesn't even get subsidised by the pbs
11:40:56<BlankEclair>so technically, insurance isn't even involved for my E2
11:41:36<steering>i don't think ive ever paid a copay just coinsurance. so the amount is basically the same for each med until the insurance renews next year. (but sometimes there is and sometimes there is not a deductible on pharmacy iirc.)
11:41:43<steering>er i mean
11:41:51<steering>i don't think ive ever paid a coinsurance just copay.
11:42:37<steering>(for most plans coinsurance is used like you pay 10-15% of ER visit or something)
12:30:27<chrismrtn>I struggled as an adult without an ID or credit history to get any sort of financial accounts. I did get a Fidelity brokerage account and a PayPal Balance account without one, though (both of these can be used as a checking account -- with the caveat that they aren't legally banks, per se). It doesn't look like either would work for her situation, however. :/
13:00:08<chrismrtn>If you're open to cosigning, you *might* find a credit union that would work. I recalled a NY one that seemed particularly LGBT-friendly, and it looks like they'll accept social security cards, birth certificates, or school IDs for ID, with the "consent of an adult joint owner". (Restricted to a few counties in NY, though.)

23:31:39<steering>does anyone use vim and have a hint for opening big files (i.e. #archivebot log) quickly?
23:33:53<nicolas17>I use less for that
23:34:32<steering>problem is sometimes i end up wanting to manipulate it more than I can with less once I have it open, to make it easier to deal with :D
23:35:40<steering>disabling vimrc speeds it up somewhat I think, I may have to see what's slowing it down
23:36:09<steering>(once it's cached it's nearly instant either way)
23:53:24<kline>steering, don't you partition by date?
