12:42:51<anonymoususer852>I'm convinced it's a relic from the old web (pre-millennia), the use of "ww(?/.*)[[:digit:]].*\." subdomains, looking at https://www2.biglobe.ne.jp/~nir/misc/fj-no-arukikata/ which returns 404 if I were to replace "www2" with "www".

The reason one often would use a www2 is to redirect and kindof hide behind that you are actually redirecting stuff over to a vendor that does specialized stuff like traffic analysis or surveys, but still show the end user that they have no reason to worry because the domain name is still the usual one (ish) that they are used to.
12:44:16<atluxity>so technically speaking the www2 would be a cname to the other service provider, skin it like the user is known with from the original website... while www goes to the webhosting for the usual website with its own CMS
