22:42:39<atphoenix>Doranwen, some of us still have 5.25" drives. I know from experience they could still be used with motherboards made as recently as 10 years ago.
22:42:56<Doranwen>ah, well, I don't, that's the thing
22:43:11<Doranwen>and the chance of me needing one, other than the occasional find in garage sale stuff, is about nil
22:43:24<Doranwen>the chance of this actually *selling* at a garage sale is also about nil
22:43:46<Doranwen>which means I have the option of either throwing it in the trash or giving it to someone who actually wants to archive it in some fashion
22:43:53<atphoenix>I'm suggesting you could hand the disk over to someone who *can* read it
22:44:31<atphoenix>even submitting it to IA as a physical donation is a possibility
22:45:04<Doranwen>I wonder if USPS considers really old floppies as media mail, lol
22:45:26<Doranwen>(I don't think anyone lives anywhere near me who would want to take it to archive it)
22:45:56<Doranwen>if it *is* counted as media mail then it wouldn't be too bad to mail - as long as the binder's fine as well
22:46:07<atphoenix>it is non-blank media. in the mail. so should meet the rules
22:46:33<Doranwen>yep
22:46:49<atphoenix>media mail is fine for books/printed content as that was the original definition
22:47:50<atphoenix>just don't try to send electrical circuit breakers and household clothes and pots and pans through it. They will issue a bill if they find that kind of stuff.
22:48:00<Doranwen>right
22:48:17<Doranwen>this one's CrossStitch Designer, and it appears it's just the two disks, both of which are there
22:48:41<Doranwen>the other one, I only have disk 1 of 2 - it's a 3.5" floppy of Diet Analysis Plus 4.0 for Windows Disk
22:50:36<atphoenix>all this sounds like perfect content for IA. Probably rare-ish software on old media. Not in 'high' demand like games. Means fewer copies probably exist.
22:52:37<atphoenix>some of the Disk 1 of 2 software situations are the 2nd disk as help files/supplemental content. Or maybe someone else has disk 2 of 2 but 1 of 2 is damaged in their set. I know that happened to me for a game I had. One of the disks was damaged.

22:55:09Doranwen nods
22:55:19<Doranwen>yeah, I'd be happy to send it on if there's someone who will take it and do something with it
22:56:31<Doranwen>the rest of the older stuff I held onto as it's CDs (from the XP or earlier era) and I can rip those myself
22:57:08<Doranwen>(and will have to check if they're even needed, too)
