05:02:22<Doranwen>that reminded me of the ill-fated phrase "nothing can go wrong", which in turn reminded me of one of the best computer games ever - The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain
05:02:37<Doranwen>one of these days I really need to figure out how to get it to run on something besides old versions of Windows
05:03:49<Doranwen>(it requires 256 colors and last time I tried installing it in a WinXP VM - the OS I played it the most on - it failed miserably - I don't think I had any success with Wine either but that was years ago, so, who knows whether now would work better)
05:04:58<SpikedCola>Doranwen: have you tried DOSBox?
05:05:07Doranwen considers is one of the best because it's just easy enough that a 9 or 10-year-old can get through it successfully but it's challenging enough to engage most any adult in some area, as very very few people would find all of the different puzzles easy enough to get through on the hard level
05:05:11<Doranwen>if it were DOS that might work
05:05:12<Doranwen>it's not DOS
05:05:19<SpikedCola>http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/28437/Lost+Mind+of+Dr.+Brain%2C+The.html
05:05:24<Doranwen>last I knew, at least

05:05:37<SpikedCola>sorry, im not familiar with the game itself
05:05:38<Doranwen>really?
05:05:48<Doranwen>interesting! I run Linux, but I have a DOS emulator
05:05:59<Doranwen>to use with DOSBox
05:06:05<Doranwen>I mean, a gui to use with it
05:06:18<SpikedCola>hm i think dosbox does more than dos now? "If you want to emulate it, you can install and run it using a DOSBox-based installation of Windows 3.x"
05:06:25<Doranwen>oh interesting
05:06:30<SpikedCola>but hopefully a path you can check out anyway
05:06:36<Doranwen>I did not know this!

05:09:00Doranwen is currently even playing through a game of Sid Meier's Civilization II
05:09:15<Doranwen>(another favorite)
05:10:38<Doranwen>bah, I have 98 and XP but not 3.x

16:17:21<Doranwen>thuban: LOL
16:17:26<Doranwen>actually, Civ II works very nicely on Wine
16:17:37<Doranwen>I never bother to play it in a VM, as it really works so well
16:17:55<thuban>huh, til
16:18:03<Doranwen>the only oddity is that they encoded the videos with an odd codec and there's something weird about the colors on them
16:18:12<Doranwen>but they still *play* and you can still see them
16:18:45<Doranwen>so I just have it open in another workspace and switch to it when I want to play another turn
16:19:10<Doranwen>and I'm the same - I didn't like Civ III and never tried IV, lol
16:19:21<Doranwen>Civ II was the one II I had when I was a kid and I love it
16:19:48<Doranwen>my brother tried the later ones and got fairly good at III at least, I don't recall if I ever got IV or the others to run on anything we had, but I stuck with II
16:20:05<thuban>he uses a mac, so i wasn't terribly keen on trying to set up wine
16:20:08Doranwen nods
16:20:43<thuban>i'm fond of iv. hit the right level of complexity and wasn't bogged down by the weird lack of focus and scale issues of v-vi
16:22:08<thuban>sullla [sic] has a load of nice iv content if you ever want to get into it. (i sometimes fall asleep to his 'ai survivor' videos)
16:23:04<Doranwen>eh, I don't have time for games, much, so I generally stick with the old stuff that I know and can play without it being too hard
16:23:28<Doranwen>I use games to unwind, not to challenge myself, so I tend not to play them on very hard levels, and I like to micro-manage, LOL
16:24:00<thuban>yeah, i feel that. these days i basically stick to guitar hero and pokémon
16:24:43Doranwen loved an ancient obscure game by Interactive Magic called Destiny (no relation to the modern game by that name) but it was plagued with programming issues and would lose parts of your progress after a while, so you never really could win the game, but it was the best micro-manager ever
16:26:40<atphoenix>SimCity fan here. I also dabbled in SimCity 2000. And recently Factorio.
16:27:27<thuban>(okay, tbf, guitar hero is as hard as you care to make it, but even on the crazy hard tracks you can play one and turn it off, instead of sitting down for a Session like a lot of big games)
16:27:36<thuban>oh, the warbirds people!
16:28:38<Doranwen>Oh yes! we actually owned SimCity 2000 so while I did play the old SimCity some, I think I preferred 2000
16:28:43<atphoenix>also fan of Turrican II on Amiga 3000. Sound and graphics on a computer that were better than my friends NES.
16:29:24<thuban>i also have an obscure favorite 90s 4x game: spaceward ho!. i wouldn't really describe it as a micromanager as it was the most stripped-down possible vision of what 4x could be, but the execution was just _perfect_ and charming in every detail
16:30:16<Doranwen>our Amiga was a 1500 or something like that, from back in the late 80s/early 90s, and my brother and I played SO much on Donald Duck's Playground (which you can find a DOS version but it worked better on the Amiga, speedwise), Major Motion, Discovery Spell (so much fun to imitate the artificial speech, LOL), Hole-in-One, and many, many more
16:30:24<atphoenix>F-18/A on Amiga was an excellent flight sim. So many hours spent flying around the California coast, taking off from Nimtz
16:30:57<atphoenix>tried to fly up to Oregon, but that got boring as there wasn't much to see with landscape
16:31:10<Doranwen>(the only annoying part was you generally had no way to save progress in a lot of the games)
16:32:27<atphoenix>Eric Chahi's Out of this World (Another World) was also good, at least I especially liked the intro cut scenes/atmosphere
16:34:00<Doranwen>once had a friend hook it up to transfer some game images because at least one of the games I couldn't find on any site ANYWHERE as an adf, it was that obscure - I uploaded it to one of the sites back then but no idea if it ever spread anywhere

16:34:28<Doranwen>was a Memory game but you matched pics with sound, very fun for younger kids
16:35:13<Doranwen>(that was when said friend accidentally ruined the boot disk :P )
16:35:29<Doranwen>(so now I can never use it again unless I get a new one)
16:35:50<Doranwen>(or figure out how to rewrite the boot disk over the entire messed-up disk)
16:37:45<atphoenix>Apple II MECC Number Munchers was also a favorite. School had IBM PS/2 Model 25 and 30 computers, BUT they also had a system called 'Trackstar' that let you run Apple II software on PC. IIRC it was basically Apple II hardware on an PC expansion slot...and even better is that you could hotkey from the Apple II program to a running DOS program like Microsoft Works 2.0 so you could play games while in typing class....
16:39:22<nertzy>One time in 4th grade I finished my work early and was allowed to go play Number Munchers on our classroom Apple II. I remember that one day I did really great and I think the teacher stopped the rest of the class to all come watch and see how far I got.
16:41:25<Doranwen>aww, Number Munchers - I used to use that just a few years ago with my tutoring students, they could play games while waiting for parents to show up to pick them up
16:41:54<Doranwen>it was one of the ones the younger bunch really liked, they thought the muncher was funny
16:42:05<Doranwen>and it ran very nicely with DOSBox
16:42:12<Doranwen>had a whole horde of abandonware games set up that way
16:42:20<Doranwen>the *children* didn't care about the graphics being ancient
16:42:23<Doranwen>as long as the game was fun
16:42:42<atphoenix>Number Munchers is a classic, fun, and you need to be able to do math. Go STEM Go!
16:42:45<Doranwen>and it was a good challenge for them
16:42:59<Doranwen>yeah, I tutor math, so, any game that really made you think math was a good one
16:43:08<Doranwen>the others I really liked were a couple of the Super Solvers ones
16:43:15<Doranwen>Outnumbered and Operation Neptune
16:43:29<Doranwen>actually, the Gizmos & Gadgets was a big favorite of a few of them
16:43:41<Doranwen>puzzle solving, basic science concepts, etc.
16:43:48<Doranwen>and they had to read and understand friction and all of that
16:44:00<Doranwen>in order to make their vehicles go faster in the race, to choose the right parts for that
16:44:01<atphoenix>also played Oregon Trail on Apple II and DOS. the graphics and hunting on DOS where much improved
16:44:09<thuban>Doranwen, did you ever try The Incredible Machine?
16:44:21<Doranwen>I played Oregon Trail II a ton as a kid :D hated dying of accidental gunshot :Ps
16:44:24<atphoenix>I wonder if they'd even allow Oregon Trail now, with it having a rifle and all
16:44:34<Doranwen>no, I don't think so
16:44:37<Doranwen>I played *something* similar
16:44:41<Doranwen>but I honestly can't remember
16:44:44<Doranwen>maybe it was that
16:44:50<Doranwen>I didn't play it all that much
16:45:09<Doranwen>I'd have to go look and see if we still have it - a lot of those games ended up being given to cousins
