06:38:37<atphoenix>there may also be some other weirdness going on with Gmail. I took a peak at my IMAP settings in the Gmail WebUI and it showed IMAP was disabled, yet Thunderbird is still downloading messages from that account via IMAP.
06:43:19<atphoenix>I should have found this first. https://support.google.com/mail/thread/9769946?hl=en I'm using OAuth2 with Thunderbird.
06:43:43<atphoenix>thus the reason the IMAP option can be turned off

09:13:21<atphoenix>Upon hearing spiders mentioned, and also being in relation to Australia, brings this OpenWRT derivative project to mind: "The ROOter Project was created to allow the use of USB Cellular modems in routers that don't have this capability using factory firmware. The project produces new firmware on a regular basis that allows you to update your router for better support of USB modems and to add new router related features.
09:13:21<atphoenix>Even though ROOter is an international project, with contributions from all over the world, it is mainly a Canadian/Australian collaboration and shows its roots on an Australian forum. The ROOter name was chosen to reflect this and the versions of the firmware have been named after something Australia is famous for, poisonous spiders." http://ofmodemsandmen.com/about.html

14:24:33<honno>Yesterday I posted about a lag issue with replaying a warc collection and someone helpfully pointed me to use profiling. I still haven't fixed it but have pinpointed where the bottlenecks are at least. If anyone has experience of optimising pywb replays for web scraping purposes, I'd be eternally grateful if you could give this GH issue a glance https://github.com/webrecorder/pywb/issues/602

18:16:00<wizwiz>hi guys I want to become a warrior but I'm not very techy and my PC is not that good. I want to rent a windows VPS, put virtualbox/vmware and go ahead and install Warrior Appliance
18:16:01<wizwiz>directly on a windows vps right?
18:16:40<@JAA>#warrior is *still* the right channel for this.
18:18:01<wizwiz>guys, really know
18:18:23<wizwiz>you have tons of channels but there are the same people in everyone
18:19:01<wizwiz>also you told me from #archiveteam to get here
18:19:09<wizwiz>now you are sending me back to #warrior
18:19:18<wizwiz>where nobody answer lol
18:19:21<@JAA>Sigh
18:19:28<@JAA>We have different channels to keep various topics separate.
18:19:44<wizwiz>cool
18:19:52<wizwiz>why dont u use discord for this
18:19:53<wizwiz>lol
18:19:55<@JAA>#archiveteam is for 'SHIT THAT SITE IS SHUTTING DOWN', #archiveteam-bs is general AT project discussion, this is for anything off-topic.
18:19:59<@JAA>Because Discord is horrible.

18:20:45<wizwiz>yeah, better with aold school plain text irc
18:20:48<wizwiz>*old
18:20:56<wizwiz>boomer
18:22:01<@JAA>Yes, none of those issues are present on IRC.
18:22:29<@JAA>It's also an open protocol, so everyone can use the client they wish instead of being forced to use Discord's shitty Electron thing.
18:23:12<wizwiz>yeah but more volunteers can come by using a more user friendly chat tool
18:23:19<wizwiz>not discord..other slack..idk
18:23:24godane quits [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
18:25:09<@JAA>Slack, Telegram, etc. all have the same fundamental issue that they're proprietary platforms where a single non-acountable company can do whatever they want with our communication channels at a whim.
18:25:55<@JAA>E.g. terminate for 'ToS violations' because someone suggested circumventing security measures or idk.
18:27:11<wizwiz>yeah but that's barely happening
18:27:13<@JAA>Apparently many people are fine with putting themselves into such a dependency, and I don't quite understand why.
18:27:37<wizwiz>there's like porn and all that stuff allowed
18:27:47<thuban>'friendliness', being a social protocol, is relative. my lightweight, highly scripted and customized irc client (made possible by the fact that irc is an open protocol) is extremely friendly *to me*; discord, slack, etc., by forcing their choices upon me, are hostile.
18:27:55<wizwiz>but you are affraid they will close a archive related chat lol
18:28:29<wizwiz>yah but do you realize you are in a bubble
18:29:03<wizwiz>and in this way a lot of possible volunteers are not aware of what you guys are doing and can't help
18:29:16<@JAA>'Let's archive extremist political organisations. Anyone have recommendations?' - A few links are shared - Terminated for propagating hate speech.
18:29:23<wizwiz>cause a random volunteer will never use a "highly scripted and customized irc client" lol
18:29:51<thuban>no, they can use any client they choose... such an the in-browser webchat.
18:29:56<thuban>*as
18:30:27<wizwiz>yeah but they can't use funny gifs lmao
18:31:15<@JAA>You can post URLs here.
18:31:22<@JAA>Some clients might even embed them directly.
18:31:54<wizwiz>ok cool
18:31:54<wizwiz>so
18:32:16<wizwiz>can I install Warrior Appliance on windows server?
18:32:28<@JAA>Still not the right channel for that question.
18:32:31<@JAA>And you still need to be patient.
18:33:03<@JAA>Check back in a few hours or so. Maybe someone has advice by then.
18:35:10<wizwiz>gotcha, you don't know
18:35:24<@JAA>Nope, I haven't used Windows in a decade.

18:51:29<wizwiz>guys I tried to read all that wiki but it's a lot to read. I just want to help and be a part by buing some resources like a VPS and run there all the stuff

22:20:47<atphoenix>wizwiz, if this wasn't on IRC, I'd advocate for it being on Matrix/Riot. I wish there were clear recommendations on what client setups can be used to bring modern chat features to IRC (like history while away and seemless mobile support). I like that both systems allow for open standards and choice of clients. Walled garden systems suck, as the official solution is (mostly) the only option. Also if they change something
22:20:47<atphoenix>making it worse, there is no recourse.
22:21:24<@Kaz>I still don't know what a matrix is, and a riot is when you throw rocks at people
22:21:29<@Kaz>irc is neither of these things, it's simple
22:24:24<atphoenix>Kaz, https://matrix.org/docs/projects/client/riot
22:24:46<atphoenix>https://matrix.org/faq/
22:25:19<@Kaz>Maturity: Not actively maintained
22:25:21<@Kaz>Language: JavaScript
22:25:23<@Kaz>oh
22:27:40<atphoenix>I used Riot as a client example. There are many clients: https://matrix.org/clients/ Also Matrix is bridgeable to IRC, e.g. on freenode: #matrix #matrix-dev
22:28:55<@Kaz>I might be being a dinosaur here but I'm very fond of irc (and i don't want another chat client to deal with)
22:29:22<atphoenix>I guess they've renamed Riot.im to Element.io https://matrix.org/docs/projects/client/element
22:30:42<atphoenix>my main complaint on IRC is it requires me to have an always-connected machine somewhere in order to not lose conversation context from missed chats
22:31:52<atphoenix>I do like the multi-network and choose-your-own-client openness of it. No complaints there. Like POP/IMAP email.
