20:30:23<icedice>If shit hits the fan there are a few TLDs that are / should be safe from political censorship:
20:34:13<icedice>.st from the registry at nic.st (no crypto) or resold by PRQ.se (where they register the domain with their own info preventing take downs for fake WHOIS info)
20:35:21<icedice>Drawbacks is ST Registry and PRQ both being Swedish companies is that since they're EU-based a court order from any EU country (like Germany, for example) could take it down
20:36:44<icedice>It is censorship free though, both Kiwi Farms (which is one of the most attacked websites out there) and Sci-Hub (which is getting sued by all four major academic publishers) use it
20:36:59<icedice>.cr from dominios.cr: https://torrentfreak.com/us-embassy-threatens-to-close-domain-registry-over-pirate-bay-domain-170620/

20:52:04<icedice>I was going to suggest .fi since it's pretty resillient and Finland is #5 on Reporters Without Borders' press freedom index, but the .fi registry seems to have started cracking down on privacy/proxy services like Njalla, so hard to recommend another registrar there that'd hold up as well for left-wing politics. ISTanCo in Serbia is accredited for .fi (and .st) and has been good for DMCA, but not sure how they are about politics. If PRQ
20:52:04<icedice>flies under their radar that could be used to buy from another registrar in case the .fi registry implements ID verification at some point or it could get suspended once flagged as a privacy/proxy service.
20:53:33<icedice>.st, .cr, and .fi are all used by OnlyFans leak sites too, which is a pretty good sign of how much pressure they can take (OnlyFans models have a habit of self-reporting their own content on piracy sites as CSAM when they get tired of DMCA not working)
20:54:47<icedice>PRQ is led by two of the three Pirate Bay guys (the ones who are not involved in Njalla) and those guys are right-wing, I think. But the service itself is apolitical and they like fucking with the US more than anything, so it'd probably work
20:58:18<icedice>ST Registry is owned by a Swedish ISP and hosting provider called Bahnhof which is pretty based when it comes to privacy, opposing mass surveillance, Internet freedom, free speech, and trolling copyright trolls. However, Bahnhof is getting sold to (probably the Swedish branch of) Norwegian ISP Telenor and I have no idea if ST Registry is included in that deal or not
21:04:00<icedice>Also, PRQ markets them self as free speech, so should be fine unless they want to look like hypocrites
21:04:18<icedice>Also, crypto payment processors will have to KYC when it's used by a EU-based business or customer starting July 10th, 2027, though the loophole is that manual on-chain wallet-to-wallet transactions that don't use a crypto payment processor are excempt (since they can't be regulated), so PRQ will probably just go back to having people order domains via support tickets and have people pay directly to their Bitcoin wallet address
21:06:16<icedice>There are some other resillient TLDs and domain registrars as well, but those are either based in countries that are not very big on free speech / press freedom or are untested for political sites
21:08:53<icedice>Also, the TLD and domain registrar not instantly suspending the domain because of some fake or real report is also something that would be needed for sites that host user-generated content and/or piss off a lot of people
21:10:16<icedice>Not sure why I yapped all of this, but given the way the Internet is heading, maybe some of it will end up being useful at some point

23:46:23<dendory>I think .is might be one of the best options for an independent TLD. The registry (ISNIC) has stated publicly, and demonstrated in practice, that it will only suspend/delete a domain on order of an Icelandic court — no other country's request suffices. It's held wikileaks.is under this policy for over a decade with no forced takedown. Ref:
23:46:23<dendory>https://goldsteinreport.com/isnic-wikileaksis/
23:46:43<dendory>Also, anyone can register a .is from anywhere in the world, which isn't the case for a lot of EU TLDs.
