02:15:46<Goku>Hi all.
02:17:33<Goku>I need some help with archiving/retrieving a message board forum. The site is called bodybuilding.com containing 100s of millions of user threads.
02:18:30<Goku>I am willing to pay £1000 to anyone who can help me as I have some pretty damn important information on there that I can't get.
02:19:00<Goku>Please let me know soon as I am incompetent as heck with all this stuff.
02:20:38<Goku>Hello? Is anyone on here?
02:20:47<nicolas17>that looks like a shop, where is the message board?
02:21:49<Goku>The message board is like this.
02:21:56<@OrIdow6>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodybuilding.com
02:22:00<@OrIdow6>"The site also once had a highly popular forum section which was shut down in September 2024 without notice. "
02:22:06<Goku>https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=179112481&p=1619261191
02:22:16<nicolas17>oh so it's already deleted
02:22:36<@OrIdow6>Not on DW
02:22:47<ymgve__>they tried to hide the secret of the 8 day week
02:22:50<Goku>Yes, the forum part of it was shut down.
02:23:19<Goku>ymgve_ haha!! Even that super popular thread is gone now.
02:23:33<ymgve__>if it's gone, there's not much archiveteam can do
02:24:01<@JAA>Sadly, £1000 doesn't buy a time machine. :-/
02:24:03<@OrIdow6>Does look like there was a big AB job in 2018
02:24:27<ymgve__>have you tried contacting the sysadmins of bodybuilding.com and offering them that £1000?
02:24:39<nicolas17>:D
02:25:37<Goku>I don't know what to do guys. How can such a big forum spanning over 20+ years with 100s of millions of threads not be archived somewhere. Way more popular than IMDB and that had a nice backup ready years ago. Or is the bodybuilding.com forum archived somewhere I just haven't found yet? Any ideas?
02:26:01<ymgve__>internet archive probably has some snapshots?
02:26:07<@OrIdow6>Goku: Have you checked web.archive.org?
02:26:08<Goku>Orldow6 an AB job? What is that?
02:26:09<@OrIdow6>Yeah
02:26:25<h2ibot>OrIdow6 edited Deathwatch (+150, /* 2024 */ forum.bodybuilding.com missed by us): https://wiki.archiveteam.org/?diff=53606&oldid=53605

02:26:41<nicolas17>it's likely very incomplete
02:27:08<Goku>ymgve_ Well, I sent then a lengthy heartfelt email to their support earlier today in regards to getting the data. Waiting on a response but I really don't know what to do at this point.
02:27:27<@JAA>We don't usually have the resources to archive large things proactively. We focus on things we know are about to disappear instead. Since there was apparently no advance notice here, we didn't have a project for it.
02:27:50<@OrIdow6>https://archive.fart.website/archivebot/viewer/job/20180525005751dl5zr looks pretty big
02:28:32<nicolas17>if the website had said "we're shutting down in a month" *and* someone had told us about it early enough, we would have rushed to comprehensively archive it
02:28:42<@OrIdow6>Goku: ArchiveBot is a bot that we have to archive websites, its data goes to web.archive.org
02:28:43<nicolas17>they shut down with zero advance notice
02:29:05<@OrIdow6>I would be interested if there were any signs ahead of time
02:29:11<@OrIdow6>If not notice, things people picked up on
02:30:05<nicolas17>OrIdow6: interesting
02:30:06<@JAA>Yeah, I remember that job, it was on a cursed pipeline. That will definitely be very incomplete indeed.
02:30:16<@OrIdow6>Ah
02:30:46<@JAA>There was a remaining queue of over 21 million when it died.
02:30:47<Goku>Orldow6 what is that archive.fart thingy containing there?
02:30:54<nicolas17>we also have no way to search the archived *contents* while IA is down :P
02:32:17<Goku>nicolas17, yeah exactly. Man, so what can be done moving forward. I still have 100s of links bookmarked that are just dead bodybuilding forum links.
02:33:29<@JAA>Looks like people certainly noticed technical issues a bit ahead of the disappearance: https://web.archive.org/web/20240909031602/https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=185769471

02:35:19Commander001 joins
02:35:38<nicolas17>we now have ways to avoid it in new jobs right?
02:35:51<@JAA>No
02:36:13<Goku>Yeah, I recall people were complaining about the bodybuilding forums going down a few times in the past year. But then they were suddenly wiped as mentioned.
02:36:37<@JAA>There are tricks to make it slightly less annoying in some cases, but that's it.
02:36:59<Goku>So what can I do guys, who can I contact? Surely that data is out there somewhere, especially since it was so recent.
02:37:32<@JAA>Most likely, unless the owners respond and bring it back online, the brunt of it is lost.
02:39:53<Goku>But such a big corporation, ahhh. How do you suggest I go about this. I mean, the knowledge logged on that site was so valuable. I would do anything to get it back (hence my £1000 offer), I just don't have a clue on how to even begin.
02:40:06<@OrIdow6>Goku: the archive.fart thing is data related to ArchiveBot, which again you can find the pages of on web.archive.org
02:40:36<Goku>Orldow6 ah I see, thanks for letting me know.
02:42:38adryd quits [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
02:44:59<@OrIdow6>So seems it was the same story as with a lot of forums, gradual decline then eventually someone stops caring
02:46:17<Goku>It's really absurd but my entire life depends on getting that archive back. I had medical records logged in there on my forum posts I made. E.g, relating to a MRI I had on my spine/brain, reports of certain specialist treatments etc. It sounds like a lie but I am dead serious. If I don't get that data then I am screwed in like 50 different ways,
02:46:18<Goku>one of which directly impacts my life since I no longer have reports of my own medical history.
02:47:16<Goku>Orldow6, yes, I have seen a ton of different message boards go down in the past 2ish years.
02:48:45<Goku>But what do you suggest I do? Who do I contact? Who can help? My sights are set on getting this back and I really need some guidance in sorting this out. I have no idea on who to ask and I found this channel through some random links.
02:51:39<Goku>This is one post I had bookmarked for example.

02:55:46<@OrIdow6>TheTechRobo: I think the session IDs might be an issue?
02:56:05<TheTechRobo>OrIdow6: Hm, yeah. Once IA is back in full I guess we could download the CDX files and try those?
