00:14:21<atphoenix>I don't think it is scalable to assume that ArchiveTeam leaders would reach out to instances. But I think it is plausible to encourage those who become aware of such upcoming shutdowns (and report them to AT, like jamesp did) to do basic FYI reach out legwork to owners to possibly get the ball rolling. I think it is probably best if the person doing the reachout is a member of the community in question, as they have a vested interest.
00:15:04<atphoenix>Also there are some migration guides for existing users jumping from instance to instance https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/
00:16:37<atphoenix>And users can export their own stuff, but re-importing those exports appears to not be implemented
00:16:43<atphoenix>"Requesting an archive of your toots and media can be done once every 7 days, and can be downloaded in ActivityPub JSON format. Mastodon currently does not support importing toots or media due to technical limitations, but your archive can be viewed by any software that understands how to parse ActivityPub documents."

17:07:05<@JAA>I'll start running the Twitter accounts from benjins's Ballotpedia list through the machinery. Like socialbot, but outlinks to #// instead of AB. 12k accounts, should be fun.
17:07:09<@JAA>arkiver: ^ FYI
17:13:28<@JAA>Also throwing everything from that list that *isn't* Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, or YouTube into #//.

22:37:50<betamax>benjins / JAA: oh, nice, someone had got to Ballotpedia before me (I started scraping this evening :D )
22:38:12<betamax>JAA: I assume you're just putting the *homepage* of the campaign sites into #// (and not archiving the entire site?)
22:39:06<betamax>four years ago I tried to archive (full crawl) as many campaign sites as I could for the 2018 midterms, running my own crawls so to not overload ArchiveBot
22:39:33<betamax>(the results are on archive.org, I never did anything with them: https://archive.org/details/2018_us_midterm_campaign_site_archive )
22:47:40<@JAA>betamax: Correct, just homepages into #//. Outlinks from Twitter will have some more, but certainly not the entire sites.
22:48:22<@JAA>The Twitter scrape's about halfway done now.
22:52:59<betamax>JAA: and I assume that trying to stick all ~13,000 campaign sites into AB is a no-no? ;)
22:53:58<betamax>(I have unfortunately lost access to the system I used four years ago, or more accurately, the uni gave me six months to remove all the hardware and disconnect from their network :D )
22:58:28<@JAA>betamax: Yeah, I think that'd need a bit more firepower behind it. Ideally #Y I guess. arkiver?
