13:06:12<pitro2k01>Greetings. I have a large number of shareware CDs from a Swedish computer magazine, ranging from maybe 1995-2005. Where and how would be the appropriate way to archive those?
13:06:16<pitro2k01>By where, I mean whether it would be better to host it at IA, or Jason's cd site.
13:06:35<pitro2k01>I'm looking to rip them myself and upload.
13:07:31<@JAA>pitro2k01: Yep, the channels have changed. -bs was originally created for off-topic stuff but then morphed into a general on-topic discussion channel while the main channel has become 'this site is shutting down tomorrow!!1!'. There's a separate -ot channel for off-topic stuff since a few years.
13:08:41<pitro2k01>I also have a bunch of other random CDs collected over the years.
13:09:25<pitro2k01>For example an info disc encouraging me to enlist to the Swedish army in 2003, apparently.
13:12:29<@JAA>I'm far from an expert on CD stuff, but generally, dump it in an appropriate file format, take scans or good photos of everything, and upload to IA items (potentially multiple discs in one if they belong together, naturally). Don't ask me about the file formats though. Maybe someone else has advice on that. There's also a wiki page, but it doesn't really give recommendations:
13:12:35<@JAA>https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/Rescuing_optical_media
13:16:28<pitro2k01>I think for the shareware CDs, it would mostly be enough to copy the files.
13:17:11<pitro2k01>I don't think there are audio tracks on any of them, although a few special issues came with a bootable Linux disc.
13:17:28<@JAA>Perhaps, but the files can always be extracted from the bin/cue or iso or whatever, whereas it's impossible to recreate the latter from just the files.
13:17:52<pitro2k01>True.
13:19:07<pitro2k01>And maybe it will also read faster that way since it's all sequential.
14:00:35<pitro2k01>However, some portion if each CD would usually contain identical every month (web browsers and DirectX.) Not sure if space is enough of a concern to remove duplicates.

15:14:02<pitro2k01>Yeah, I know. Or at least suspected so but wasn't sure. (It used to be SketchCow without "the", and SketchTheCow doesn't have +o.)
15:15:04<pitro2k01>And I asked first in #archiveteam but was referred here by JAA.
15:17:07<IDK>was wondering the same thing
15:18:47<IDK>But I think JAA is leading all the projects now
15:20:42<pitro2k01>The next thing to consider is how to make the copies efficiently and properly. The only computer right now that I have an optical drive in is a Windows computer. It seems the better free (libre) software doesn't come with Windows builds. I'm a Linux user day-to-day, so I have a choice between installing/live-running a Linux distro on the CD computer or figuring out a way to rip CDs on Windows.

20:20:34<@JAA>IDK: I most definitely am not. But yeah, Jason isn't involved much in day-to-day activity in the last few years.
