16:15:41<Grzesiek11>is it normal for there to be no derive job to make "IA H.264" files on an item with a lot of video files (200+)?
16:16:43<Grzesiek11>I uploaded (some of) these as MKV, and I'm wondering whether I should remove them and just add MP4 remuxes myself, so they are playable
16:17:03<Grzesiek11>or if the derive will run, just idk, a month from now
16:23:16<Grzesiek11>there's 0 tasks waiting to run, to be clear
16:26:57<Grzesiek11>also I uploaded this via S3, if that matters
16:36:43<klea>hmm, you may need to manually trigger the derive.php task?
16:40:43<justauser>There is a button somewhere to force a derive.
16:40:43<justauser>I don't think derived files are a good idea in general, though...
16:50:20<klea>Yeah~
16:51:04<klea>WARCs without indexes are better too, download the whole file, just to be able to index and notice you only want some set of bytes, and get those bytes from your local copy rather than being able to ask IA for only those ranges.
16:55:21<justauser>IIRC most of the tools make their own cdx files?
16:56:15<klea>huh, I thought the .os.cdx.gz files in AB were from IA derivations?
16:59:43<klea>huh, interesting: archiveteam_archivebot_go_20260817174539_b9e0f994 has archiveteam_archivebot_go_20260817174539_b9e0f994.cdx.{gz,idx} (original), and boyzforum.qiarchive.org-inf-20260816-004845-8rmrq-00001.warc.os.cdx.gz (derivative). I wonder if AT's tooling puts that file, or if it's like archiveteam_archivebot_go_20260817174539_b9e0f994_meta.xml which is also considered
16:59:43<klea>as original.
17:02:00<justauser>Grzesiek11: It's item page -> Manage -> small "derive" button if you want to force it.
17:43:53<Grzesiek11>justauser: would you recommend the remux I wanted to do over deriving? also, if deriving is not considered a good idea, how can I *not* derive things? most of the time it happens automatically
17:45:40<justauser>That's my personal opinion, not a "real" advice, but if you want to force the derive *not* to happen, there is a checkbox for it too.
17:46:20<justauser>I'd say upload as-is, without caring for the particular format or derivations.
17:47:03<justauser>Being easily watchable online is, IMO, overrated and potentially attracts extra load.
17:47:32<Grzesiek11>someone else really wants it to be watchable online tho, personally I wouldn't care
17:58:44<Grzesiek11>also, while I'm here, though I'm not planning to do this at the moment: how would I go around getting my own WARCs into Wayback?
17:59:18<nicolas17>the usual answer is "you don't"
17:59:51<Grzesiek11>that's not a very reassuring answer then
18:04:08<nicolas17>an admin can manually move your WARC items to a wayback-indexed collection if they trust you that those WARCs are a pristine capture and you didn't mess with the data or capture it with tools that would mess with it
18:04:54<nicolas17>idk how you get that trust, the first time I requested that was after years of being involved in archiveteam :P
