20:13:56<steering>On Wednesday I took a look at an NTSB report and realised they had unintentionally released something they weren't allowed to.
20:13:59<steering>The NTSB routinely uses audio analysis of cockpit voice recorders to investigate plane crashes, it has proven to be an immensely powerful technique, but I noticed one report had pubished a fairly detailed spectrogram. A visual representation of the audio showing frequencies vs time.
20:14:04<steering> I wondered whether it could be converted back into the audio, or at least some approximation, and sure enough some smart people actually pulled it off. Within 24 hours the entire NTSB archive was shut down.
20:14:08<steering>lol'd
20:15:02<@JAA>:-(
20:15:09<@JAA>So now we can't archive it.
20:15:23<steering>although i do wonder what they actually reconstructed
20:15:38<steering>the image was probably not that great knowing nasa images

20:21:13<@JAA>> advances in image recognition and computational methods
20:21:15<@JAA>lol
20:21:21<@JAA>It's just an FFT...
20:21:27<steering>I mean, maybe
20:21:49<steering>I wouldn't be surprised if they're not worried about an FFT with such low resolution but rather they ran it through an AI that made it sound realistic, or something
20:21:52<@JAA>Well, the inverse of one, to be precise.
20:21:59<steering>but I also wouldn't be surprised if the NTSB is just incompetent :P
20:22:25<steering>isnt a ft/fft technically either direction already? :P
20:22:36<@JAA>Sure, you can use language models to then interpret the not-very-high-fidelity audio you get from that.
20:22:57<@JAA>It's very close, yeah.
20:23:33<steering>i dont really understand what it is other than "put in waveform, get out frequencies"
20:23:36<@JAA>Been a while, but IIRC, it's two tiny changes.
20:23:48<@JAA>Flipping a sign somewhere or similar.
20:24:34<@JAA>Yup, and a spectrogram is basically just doing that over and over for short windows in the audio.
20:25:01<@JAA>The colour or brightness in the resulting graph is the amplitude at each frequency.
20:25:38<steering>yeah. i just mean i've never bothered to understand the math
20:26:00<steering>it's a bit beyond my basic-calculus understanding tbh
20:27:49<@JAA>Yeah, the details get a bit hairy.

20:41:24<steering>(he also mentions that he was doing it 30 years ago)
20:45:03<@JAA>Yeah, I mean, it's a totally normal and established technique even for certain audio editing etc. to convert it to spectral space, apply some changes, and then convert it back.
20:53:10<@JAA>Hmm, he mentions takedowns. I wonder whether his video is at risk as well.
