04:49:28<mind_combatant>does anyone know if the opposite of an hdmi dummy plug exists, in other words, a dongle-like device that you can plug into a monitor's hdmi port and nowhere else, and it gives it a valid, blank signal?
04:49:48<steering>yes
04:49:58<steering>oh wait I'm dumb and didn't actually read that
04:50:33<steering>... why do you need such a thing :D
05:01:02<mind_combatant>i have a nextdock, which is really great for it's intended uses, but if i could give it a dummy hdmi signal, i could also use it for a few other useful things, like as a USB or bluetooth keyboard and trackpad (i can do this already, but only for 5 minutes at a time, after which, it goes to sleep due to thinking there's nothing connected because it's not receiving video)
05:01:26<mind_combatant>nexdock*
05:05:10HackMii quits [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
05:11:56<pabs>plug in an RPi and run a minimal window manager?
05:41:04<mind_combatant>yeah, that's what i was considering, but then the pi needs to get power from somewhere, and i'd rather not use what few ports on the nexdock there are for that, or use a usb hub or battery pack, as that'd be getting more and more bulky and less portable. ideally, there'd be a device that is low-power enough and still able to generate a basic signal that it could run entirely off of the hdmi port alone. it /feels/ like that should be
05:41:04<mind_combatant>possible.
05:44:57<nicolas17>maybe there is a cheap enough something-to-HDMI adapter that gives a valid HDMI signal even when nothing is connected to its input
05:46:29<mind_combatant>hmm, that's a thought...
05:51:41<nicolas17>mind_combatant: ok it turns out what you want isn't directly possible
05:51:48<mind_combatant>the other option is i suppose if anyone has hacked the firmware of these nexdocks, but i haven't seen any efforts toward that online, sadly, and i'm not experienced enough to do that kind of thing from scratch, i don't think they even have a mechanism to officially update the firmware (plus i don't have enough spare money to buy replacements for any bricking i do were i to try hacking them).
05:51:57<nicolas17>devices can be powered from HDMI video sources
05:52:08<nicolas17>a monitor is not an HDMI source, it's an HDMI sink, it won't *provide* power over HDMI
05:52:18<mind_combatant>darn...
05:52:39<nicolas17>so a dummy plug can't get power from the monitor to generate the signal, you can't avoid needing USB or something to power it
05:58:05<mind_combatant>in that case, my thought is probably: what's the cheapest, lowest power thing that will generate a valid hdmi signal? does anyone know of any applicable projects for, like, a microcontroller, or would it still probably be best for an rpi 0, or maybe some cheap streaming dongle instead?
06:03:24<pabs>chromecast?
06:04:49<nicolas17>lowest power would be a rpi pico with a custom program generating the HDMI signal, but that would take work, and wiring it to an HDMI connector etc :P
06:05:46<nicolas17>I imagine you want something that already has HDMI output :P
07:20:44<mind_combatant>nicolas17: actually, that's kinda what i was thinking, but i was hoping someone would already have something written that i could just flash to it and wire up the connector. ah well, i could probably do it myself, or just use a chromecast or rpi or similar in the meantime. i do have a spare old chromecast at the moment, but it's surprisingly power-hungry, and i'd rather send a black screen if possible to use less power too.
