00:00:14<nicolas17>has anyone heard of conditional GET requests...
00:05:12<steering>I kinda wanna rebuild the wheel on Home Assistant, tbh
00:05:29<steering>I shouldn't, but I've wanted to since before it was a thing (or at least a thing I had heard of, like 11-12 years ago)
00:05:58<@JAA>'I shouldn't do this, but what if I do anyway?' is always a great basis for tech projects! :-)
00:06:02<steering>indeed
00:06:13<steering>actually handling the stream from the camera is laughably easy, just ffmpeg it
00:06:15<nicolas17>I bought an ESP32 dev board two years ago and I had Plans for it and I still haven't unpacked it
00:06:22<@imer>I pray for you you won't have any wireless connectivity issues. my stuff somehow has stopped breaking after changing nothing *knocks on wood*
00:06:22<@imer>t's real irritating if shit just stops working without any way to figure out why
00:06:54<steering>but then I have to figure out something to do a live view (ffmpeg can turn it into HLS for me apparently? and then maybe I need some JS on the browser side? IDK, haven't tested)
00:06:56<@JAA>Hmm, are there security cameras with PoE?
00:07:07<steering>and what kinda policy I want for retention, fps, etc
00:07:11<steering>yes, mine is poe ethernet, not wireless
00:07:18<@JAA>:-)
00:07:21<@JAA>Ethernet++
00:07:21<eggdrop>[karma] 'Ethernet' now has 3 karma!
00:07:22<@JAA>WiFi--
00:07:23<eggdrop>[karma] 'WiFi' now has -2 karma!
00:07:38<steering>I got a junction box as well so plenty of room for cables

00:08:05<steering>came with decent-ish waterproofing stuff too but i'll probably just epoxy around the cable in the wall :P
00:08:06<@imer>wifi has been solid for me too fwiw (although camera is also wired), mostly referring to zigbee/zwave
00:08:40<steering>nicolas17: I have a couple of microcontrollers that I bought ~last year with Big Plans and haven't done anything
00:08:52<steering>not to mention the one that I bought when I was still in high school and never did anything actual with it :D
00:09:47<steering>someone in other channels has been talking about how he tied some old Cisco phones into his Home Assistant, which is actually a *really* good idea
00:10:09<steering>they're like $20 touchscreens that can run custom (albeit basic) web menus
00:10:20<@JAA>Nice
00:10:46<@JAA>Also, which cameras did you get?
00:11:06<steering>uhhh some google result that didn't seem too terrible :P just a sec

00:11:40<@JAA>On that note, my printer quest from a few weeks ago ended with an Epson EcoTank, and it seems to do well so far (apart from the setup on Windows being as monitor-punch-inducing as expected).

00:14:51<steering>my biggest problem with actually doing any kind of smart home stuff is the actual install
00:15:06<@JAA>lol, those phone example pictures look so very real.
00:15:27<steering>lol, yeah

13:41:37<myself>nah, the long bits are awesome. You knock a hole that's the size of an outlet anyway, feed the long bit in through that hole, steer it with the handles or balls shown on that page or in the related items, and drill the sill plate.
13:42:33<myself>When you get through, you release the trigger but leave the drill there, hanging out of the wall, and trot downstairs to see where it came through. If it looks good, you affix the wire bridle through the hole in the tip of the drillbit, then run back upstairs and pull the drill up, and the long bit acts as a fishtape to pull the wire into the hole
13:42:33<myself>it just made.
13:43:19<steering>well, yeah, i knock a hole that's the size of an outlet... and then i knock a bunch more out around it while trying to get the bit in just right :P
13:44:51<steering>The biggest problem I still have is actually just that I need to cross the house from front to back somehow.
13:46:31<steering>I can get from my office to the library via an area under the stairs, but I need to get to my bedroom somehow (and also past my bedroom to the back of the house and then to the garage :P)
13:47:46<steering>(and then ideally I also need to get ethernet up into various places upstairs for my smart home aspirations and POE)
