22:14:57<nukke>alright I need assistance with some electrical stuff
22:15:23<nukke>I have an AC adapter that physically fits the port of a device, but I wanna make sure I don't kill it
22:15:56<nukke>the device I'm trying to power, according to the manual, asks for 19.5V@3.33A (or 19V@3.42A)
22:16:14<nukke>the adapter I have handy is 19.5V@9.23A . if I understand correctly, the voltage is what matters, right? the amperage is "up to" but the adapter should be able to function at whatever the device demands (3.3A) or am I not understanding this
22:20:38<nicolas17>correct
22:20:40<nicolas17>if the device draws more amps than the adapter supports, it could damage or overheat the *adapter*, not the device
22:22:22<nukke>right, the adapter in this case is ~180W (19.5@9.23A) like I mentioned, and the device asks for a 65W charger (19.5V@3.3A)
22:23:00<nukke>err, that's the output for the adapter. I see a reading for input (100-240V@2.34A) but idk if the input matters at all
22:41:25<nicolas17>does it have a barrel jack? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coaxial_power_connector
22:43:40<nicolas17>if so you should make sure the polarity matches https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AC_adaptor_polarity.png
22:46:13<nukke>Yes barrel
22:46:19<nukke>5.5mm
22:49:48<myself>5.5 with a 2.1 center pin, and 5.5 with a 2.5 center pin, are both common, and either don't fit, or fit poorly and make marginal contact.
22:50:25<nukke>Looks like it does have the same polarity
22:51:32<nukke>So I have two identical devices, but only have the AC adapter for one so I'm trying to get a replacement for that second device. The adapter that came with the first device is this https://x0.at/nK4d.jpg
22:52:06<nukke>Here is the spare adapter I have handy https://x0.at/hbVg.jpg
22:53:13<myself>Totally fine.
22:54:13<myself>Typically anything that asks for 19v or 20v or 21v is fine with anything between 15 and 25, by the way. Just get the polarity right (those are both center positive, which is the most common) and it'll be fine.
22:58:03<nukke>Awesome. Thanks for the help. I got a good deal on a pair of wifi APs but only came with one adapter
22:58:41<nukke>And of course Amazon is completely useless nowadays. Bunch of fake postings for adapters

23:15:01<fireonlive>ugh amazon's the worst
23:16:14<fireonlive>i had a box with two NICs way back when and... iptables masquerade i think. 'router'!
23:16:14<nukke>it is. seriously, search for "19v 45w adapter" and try to dig through the trash. not even alibaba is this bad
23:17:35<fireonlive>there's some query param you can add to make it stuff sold by amazon only at least ... but you still get commingling :\
23:17:38<steering>nukke: speaking of mini PCs, you can use NUC power supplies for it, lol
23:18:10<steering>theyre 5.5x2.5 19V and 65W+
23:31:48<myself>nukke: forgive the URL, but if you want a supply chain that doesn't suck ass, get stuff from a real distributor:
23:31:48<myself>https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/ac-dc-desktop-wall-power-adapters/130?s=N4IgjCBcoCwBxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAPZQDa4YAnAOxjUiFh0DMlATCALqEAOALlBABlPgCcAlgDsA5iAC%2BhNmDj1oIFJAw4CxMiHgACAOoN9lY6YCsABguEAbLZMOwdkPctvqT03E-OQOHMAyh9Gax9uEH5BAFVJcT4AeVQAWVx0bABXUVx5QgBaDjUNMSydEkhySi45BRBi8gAFIgB3XFEDISyeHkxxXGwuB0QQcQATQQKwawheAUgQUz4ATx48xcyUOqA
23:32:42<myself>That's filtered by chassis type, voltage, and only in-stock models, sorted by price. You should further filter by plug type (either the 2.1 or 2.5 center pin, I don't know which you have).
23:34:35<myself>(You can do the same thing on Octopart and get pricing across several distributors, but it's a little more awkward in the search experience.)
23:37:30<nukke>Oh dang I didn't think of digikey! I actually live within driving distance of their HQ 👀
23:37:49<nukke>I wonder if they have a brick and mortar store
23:38:40<myself>nope but I think they do will-call for orders placed online
23:39:23<myself>here's Octopart: https://octopart.com/search?category_id=6320&outputvoltage=19&in_stock_only=1&sort=median_price_1000&sort-dir=asc&outputpower=%2845__100%29
