05:27:24<BPCZ>Does what I need, ships binaries for multiple arches easily, doesn’t have the DX overhead and complexity of C++ or Rust, is perfectly fast enough for any sort of serialization workload, very trivial multi threading
05:27:33<fireonlive>:)
05:28:03<pabs>maybe just go back to activex? should be better than anything
05:28:43<BPCZ>If I have a functional implantation and need it to go faster threads are trivial in my environment. Hours of my life optimizing memory and hot loops is much more expensive
05:29:30pabs sighs at another privacy tire fire https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/articles/its-official-cars-are-the-worst-product-category-we-have-ever-reviewed-for-privacy/ https://lwn.net/Articles/943699/ https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37401563
05:32:26<BPCZ>We recently went down a rabbit hole of serializing and sending 200 million messages a second from a single machine. The POC was in Python but had thread issues and the libraries for interacting with Kafka were not great, but it worked.
05:32:36<BPCZ>when we needed more messages a second I rewrote it in Go and moved to protobufs and batched sends.
05:33:22<BPCZ>A coworker wanted it to go even faster so rewrite it in C++ and it got marginally faster but was still network limited on sending
05:34:13<BPCZ>When I needed it to go faster than 200 messages a second I turned it into command and control across 12 worker machines and can do ~1.5 billion messages a second now
05:34:32<BPCZ>Because go makes multi node not extremely painful

19:04:56<lumidify>I guess this probably isn't the right channel, but I'm not sure where to ask (and I suppose data recovery is sort of archive-related): I'm trying to recover data from old VideoCDs, but I'm having problems with a few of them that contained slideshows. I can use cdrdao and vcdxrip to get the mpeg files, but the slideshow disks are a bit special (from what I gather, they saved the pictures as
19:05:03<lumidify>"segments" on the VCD instead of as regular video). If I try to play one of the recovered files, the images are just shown really quickly in the beginning (I think the timestamps are completely messed up). I can extract the images and recreate a slideshow with ffmpeg by just spreading the images evenly across the time the audio takes, but that doesn't really seem ideal (these aren't my own VCDs,
19:05:09<lumidify>I just got them from someone else, so I have no idea what exactly they were supposed to look like originally). Does anyone here know if there's a way to fix the mpeg videos so they can be played normally, or do you have any suggestions what a better channel for asking this question would be?
19:07:23<@JAA>I have no idea about the question, but this is a perfectly fine place for it.
19:08:13<fireonlive>JAA: you should!

21:06:40<flashfire42>Facinating. I wonder if they could send me like a few thousand prepaid envelopes or what not cause I got a lot of shit to send if I can
21:07:11<@JAA>> Who pays for shipping books?
21:07:11<@JAA>> The sender pays the shipping costs, but we will compensate it with a library premium membership. We will also introduce a reward system for active contributors soon.
