22:14:11<systwi>Hahahaaaa...
22:15:04<systwi>I'm really trying to hold back on ranting about how poorly structured macOS is. This OS just loves to crash and doesn't care if s*** gets corrupt.
22:16:14<systwi>"I see you're running some GNU/Linux VMs, want me to freeze up for 8 minutes and then kernel panic because the window server didn't get a response in a whopping 91 seconds?"
22:16:19systwi sighs
22:32:48Doranwen sympathizes greatly
22:32:57<Doranwen>I was so glad when we got to switch my grandpa away from it
22:33:57<Doranwen>other than his occasional "where did this icon go" (spoiler: he accidentally clicked and dragged it off the dock, but it was *that* easy to restore) and a little sadness that his pretty screensaver/picture slideshow mix was now only a true screensaver, he's been happy with the Linux-that-looks-like-Mac that I put on his "new" computer
22:34:46<Doranwen>a bonus is that I put Palapeli on it and he's got a newfound obsession with doing jigsaw puzzles of favorite pictures, which is good for keeping his mind sharp
22:35:30<Doranwen>(and good riddance to the two very unhelpful commenters on the Mint forums whose only response to my questions of "how do I do this" was to tell me that my grandpa was better off staying with Mac and it was a foolish idea for me to try to switch him over)

22:53:44<systwi>Thanks Doranwen. Didn't know about Palapeli, downloading now. :-D
22:54:13<systwi>Re: the unhelpful Mint forum users, yeah, that's _not_ the spirit of FLOSS, come on...
22:54:45<systwi>Comments like those don't help people _learn_.
22:55:13<Doranwen>fortunately I was able to figure out what to do by someone mentioning Youtube videos - I kept forgetting that people did guides on stuff there, and after a bit I managed to settle on something that would work
22:55:38<Doranwen>it might not match *perfectly*, but my grandpa wasn't in love with Mac design or anything, it was just a matter of keeping stuff in roughly the same place and with the same icons as far as possible so he wasn't totally lost as to what to do
22:56:33<systwi>That's nice, I'm glad his transition to Linux was relatively smooth. What OS did you set him up with?
22:58:22<systwi>My family is a bit difficult on that. I grew up with a mix of System 7 and WinXP, and my parents have been using Macintoshes since the 90s and have stuck with them since. I don't mind the OS......sometimes......and when it works, but take that all with a grain of salt, hehehe.
23:00:33<systwi>I prefer the freedom/open nature of Linux, intuitiveness of the GNU coreutils, the non-proprietary-ness of your standardized IBM PC compatible hardware, the speed and efficiency of it all, and the <insert another point here>.
23:04:25<systwi>As notoriously unstable Classic Mac OS was (no memory protection), it still holds a special place in my heart for its nostalgia.

23:09:08<Doranwen>systwi: I know Mint Mate best so I went with that, even though from what I read Cinnamon would probably have been better for Mac imitation
23:09:15<systwi>Launcher, At Ease, Apple Menu Items, ClarisWorks, HyperCard, Jigsaw Puzzle, Scrapbook, I could go on. :-)
23:09:29<Doranwen>I wanted a system I knew the ins and outs of well so I could be his tech support
23:09:39<systwi>Oh right, right, duh, I forgot you said Mint.
23:09:58<Doranwen>that was half the reason we switched - he'd keep having trouble with something and none of us in the same household could do a thing to help him because we all didn't know squat about Macs
23:10:05<systwi>I think it was a good choice.
23:10:35<systwi>Ahh, gotcha. Made troubleshooting much easier.
23:10:39<Doranwen>most definitely!
23:10:54<systwi>I take it you use Mint as well, and maybe with MATE?
23:10:58<Doranwen>and these days his worst trouble is accidentally drag/dropping a webapp off the dock and making it disappear
23:10:59<Doranwen>yup, lol
23:11:03<Doranwen>been using it for years
23:11:35<systwi>Nice, good choice. :-)
23:12:36<Doranwen>I definitely don't regret it
23:12:48<systwi>I've played around with Pop!_OS and Zorin OS a little bit and from what I recall, those simulate a macOS-like environment as well. But yeah, best to set him up with an OS that your family uses, too.
23:13:04<systwi>Glad to hear. :-)
23:13:18<Doranwen>wouldn't have been able to do nearly as much on the Yahoo Groups project if I'd still been on Windows, ugh
23:14:23<systwi>I haven't been using GNU/Linux very extensively, aside from on servers and some older computers, but I have been using Artix GNU/Linux with MATE for about 10 months now. I used Arch with Cinnamon before that, but distro hopped a while later.
23:14:34<systwi>Hehe, I feel you.
23:14:49<Doranwen>I'd never tried using the Windows terminal when I *was* on Windows - having enjoyed the Linux one and then used a spare Windows box with a Python script, it was like "oof, what terribleness is this???"
23:15:29<systwi>I forgot Windows has its own terminal emulator now, haha, it's probably a garbage mess.
23:15:58<systwi>PowerShell is....okay, and Command Prompt is also....just okay.

23:41:03<Doranwen>on Mint I did 10-12, depending on which box I was on - it was way easier to get a new instance going there
