08:19:26<asie>i'm trying to build something more resilient (and spacious) than a single 2TB HDD for personal data archival
08:19:48<asie>i'm not sure if i should go for fewer new drives or more "made a few years ago but not/lightly used" drives for the same price
08:20:01<asie>and then build a raid5 or raid6 respectively
08:25:59<nikow>If used drive is not 50% cheaper - it's not worth it IMHO. Use new drives - in Europe right now 6TB are cheapest if you count TB/price
08:26:29<nikow>asie: And single drive is not enough - but two smaller ones and have backup - every drive can die in every moment without warning.
08:28:05<asie>I know
08:28:16<asie>That's why I want to upgrade
08:28:21<asie>Because this one can fail at any moment
08:29:19<asie>Anyhow, I checked prices in Poland and 4TB appears similar TB/price if not a bit cheaper here
08:29:27<nikow>I do not know your expectations - but i have two gigabyte brixes with 4x6TB external drives connected to them over USB3.0. It works 120MB/s, capped by Ethernet speed.
08:29:45<nikow>asie: You're not correct, in Poland TB/price best are 6TB at the moment - Seagate Backups
08:30:04<nikow>or WD Passports, just not elements ones, because those are terribly slow.
08:30:10<asie>Oh, shucking?
08:30:26<asie>Or just using external drives
08:30:41<nikow>That's the way i go. External drives are IMHO safer - They sit unlugged most of the time.
08:31:05<nikow>So even if ransomware/bad power happen - you are safe. Especialyl if you do not have full isolating UPS.
08:31:26<nikow>asie: Which part of Poland are you? Lower Silesia maybe?
08:31:38<spirit>raid is the dumbest idea you could have when thinking about backups
08:31:48<spirit>sorry for the hyperbole
08:31:54<asie>nikow: Nah, north
08:32:09<asie>spirit: I mean, for truly important data I use more than that
08:32:20<nikow>https://allegro.pl/oferta/dysk-zewnetrzny-wd-elements-2-5-5tb-usb-3-0-10703140744 Those are slow as hell.
08:32:23<spirit>just buy multiple drives, verify then sync them regularly and store them at different physical locations
08:33:09<asie>But there's a lot of stuff I backup off the 'net "just in case". I also don't really have more than one... physical location
08:33:12<nikow>https://allegro.pl/oferta/seagate-basic-pamiec-dysk-zewnetrzny-usb-3-0-5tb-11598729598 those are good enough (100-120MB/s write, 140-180MB/s read)
08:33:59<nikow>asie: I do have 2 Rpi4 for archives - one for live thingies, one just to rsync between drives. 100% lezy setup
08:34:18<nikow>Tho Rpi4 are not best if you plan to expand - thin clients for OS seems to be cheaper.

15:38:45<@JAA>nikow: 'in Europe right now 6TB are cheapest if you count TB/price' Huh? 18 TB are the cheapest per TB here in Switzerland. And they're proper models, too. Seagate Exos X18 and WD Ultrastar DC HC550. Toshiba's slightly smaller Enterprise Capacity drives are also similarly priced. The usual bullshit (WD Elements etc.) is ~10% more expensive per TB.

I know it will be more economical if you include power costs for year operation, but right now for some reason every shop tells you to wait 2-3 months for big boys, when those 5-6TB They ship tomorrow.
