05:16:23<@OrIdow6>More or less darked and then deleted

05:45:36<atphoenix>"Archived recordings won’t be deleted, they’ll be hidden from listings and inaccessible via direct link. Actual removal from database and file store will happen some time after archival, but probably not sooner than few weeks/months after archival. For the time being we’re gonna keep them for a while, and figure out what’s a reasonable TTL for pruning them.

18:43:11<Wayward>if it takes 10 to 12 days to format (not quick format) a 5TB USB 2.5" WD Elements Portable, is there something wrong with it?
18:43:34<Wayward>format NTFS
18:45:19<Wayward>i did it on 2 different computers, same result.
18:50:25<masterX244>USB2 or USB3?
19:01:46<@JAA>I assume those are SMR?
19:16:04<Wayward>JAA: probably. masterX244: usb3
19:16:06Iki quits [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
19:17:31<masterX244>did some math earlier, Must be something else slowing the HDDs down than the USB cable so the SMR theory fits
19:18:11<@JAA>I wonder what access pattern the Windows formatting tool has. Might be horrible. Try dd or similar?
19:22:09<Wayward>i haven't tried linux, no.
19:22:39<@JAA>Just something that writes to the drive linearly I mean. I have no idea what exists in the Windows world for that.
19:23:00<Wayward>it's weird. i would hope/expect the drive's firmware could recognize when it's being formatted/zeroed out and not SMR shingle repair while doing so.
19:25:08<Wayward>but yeah, windows format is completely linear
19:29:34<@JAA>I haven't had issues with my SMR drives and large sequential writes, but they're Seagate 3.5", so they might work differently.
19:30:55<@JAA>I believe the cache takes care of that use pattern, i.e. it caches newly incoming data and then checks whether a shingle would be overwritten anyway. Not entirely sure though, and of course the manufacturers don't document this at all.
19:32:33<Wayward>plus, WD encloses whatever drives it feels like, willy nilly, depending on their given supply chain and inventory overhead.
