07:23:20<atphoenix>from #youtubearchive:
07:23:24<atphoenix><lennier1> Ballpark estimate of low-resolution YT video archive data size. About 400 hours of video currently uploaded every minute (saw both 300 and 500 given), or 2.1M hours uploaded per year. 480p is about 350MB/hr, so a one year 480p archive is about 735TB. QCIF is about 100MB/hr, so a one year QCIF archive is about 210TB. Sound about right?
07:23:24<atphoenix><atphoenix> 8760 hours/year * 60 minutes/hour = 525600 minutes/year. 525600 minutes/year * 400 playbackhours/minute uploaded = 210 M playbackhours/year uploaded
07:23:45<atphoenix><atphoenix> so I think multiple 100x ?
07:27:24<atphoenix>Low resolution isn't the only option for encoding. 720p resolution with low framerates say 5-10 fps may be more useful for some types of content than high framerate, low resolution.
07:27:54<lennier1>Yeah, you're right. Wrote down the right formula, but dropped a couple of zeros at some point.
07:30:28<lennier1>Low-res is nice since you can get it straight from YT, but yeah, I don't know what's the best bang per MB.
07:31:36<lennier1>But at something like 21PB, would anyone even store it?
07:32:01<lennier1>Obviously much less if you limit it by high views or something.
07:43:37<atphoenix>IMO, the best hope is a distributed federated/federatable archive. I'd personally only be interested in storing stuff of interest to me :) Let's Play type of content is generally excluded, unless I actually watched a particular episode that was unique. Like that recorded game play of Factorio with around 1000 players all in the same game, where almost *everything* was being done with manual crafting.
07:47:01<atphoenix>and of course since blockchain is still the hot thing, we'll need a 'coin' too. Call it ArchiveCoin. :)

20:01:45<atphoenix>billy549, try setting up smokeping. You can use it to monitor your ISP connection's stability.
20:01:52<billy549>Will do c:
20:02:13<billy549>i think it might just be IRC client instead of general ISP connectivity, since my Mac goes to sleep and probably doesnt keep network on 24/7
20:04:55<atphoenix>you can run local ping tests too. I'll sometimes run 4 parallel ping tests, one to my firewall/router, and one to my cable modem, and then the next node at my ISP, and then some big site out on the Internet that should have a solid connection.
20:06:24<atphoenix>Depending on if you see issues (and where you see issues begin), you can get an idea as to what may be failing, and who you might be able to contact.
20:23:41<billy549>fairs c:
20:24:07<billy549>It does only seem to be IRC though, since everything else i unlock laptop and it's got new notifs/discord messages/emails etc
20:24:13<billy549>who knows, maybe now i re-enabled Power Nap it'll stay up
20:24:28<billy549>my concern was more if it was constantly showing "join/leave/join/leave" and clogging up logs/annoying people, but then i remembered bouncer
