08:40:05<staging_help>I have some storage and compute laying around and would like to contribute some as a staging server, as my warriors often seem to be bottlenecked at this end.
08:40:06<staging_help>The only guide i found is this: https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/Dev/Staging and i think it could be written a bit more comprehensive. is there a more comprehensive way to do this?
09:00:18<thuban>staging_help: you're right, that documentation is somewhat out of date.
09:00:49<thuban>unfortunately (1) due to their trusted position, staging servers are generally only operated by long-time archiveteam volunteers, and (2) the bottlenecks at the staging servers are downstream of the fact that archiveteam projects are currently uploading to temporary storage due to the recent internet archive outage (so adding more servers won't help very much).
09:02:44<thuban>the good news is that the internet archive is accepting uploads again, so we'll be able to stop using temp storage very shortly, and upload slots for warriors should stop being an issue

14:40:12<anonyneko>I did have trouble opening the homepage when I was visiting Russia two months ago, but my server was still reachable, and it's still reachable now
14:40:59<anonyneko>Cloudflare is probably too big to block, but I think RKN can block hetzner with relatively little consequences, it's not like Hetzner allows Russians to host anything there these days
14:41:10<murb>well i can reach various things in russia from hetzner.
14:41:37<anonyneko>remote desktop streams from my relatives' computers to hetzner still work too
14:41:39<murb>anonyneko: only russian residents., the embargo doesn't apply to say russians living in france.
14:41:48<immibis>murb: they're literally money just not in that way that helps you buy bread. If the crypto bubble taught us anything it's that anything that acts like a currency can be integrated into one giant inter-network of money. All it takes is one atomic swap pattern or a trustworthy custodial exchange.
14:42:13<murb>immibis: they'll give you loads of them if you ask nicely ;-)
14:42:28<immibis>and... You don't get to decide the market price.
14:42:51immibis has no idea how ripe atlas probe credits work
14:45:32<immibis>murb: I believe they've been known to ban people for having Russian names
14:50:46<anonyneko>I think you're generally safe if you provide a residence permit like murb said
14:51:16<anonyneko>otherwise yeah, probably will be banned
14:52:12<anonyneko>Reading through that thread, I think it's RKN's usual "network isolation exercise", they're checking to see how much stuff breaks by cutting off access from a small segment of users
14:52:42<anonyneko>Which may or may not lead to then blocking something altogether, sometimes it's a check to see what happens if the service blocks Russian IPs

15:18:51<myself>immibis: ripe atlas probe credits are earned for hosting a probe, every time someone conducts a measurement using your probe, you earn a credit, which you can then spend on conducting measurements of your own. Since the system is always conducting baseline measurements of its own, it's "printing" new credits at all times, guaranteeing that they're
15:18:51<myself>worthless
15:20:41<myself>They might be useful here if you wanted to probe reachability or DNS resolution of a given service from all over the world, for instance, to see what needs to be geo-restricted when fetching it in order to get a clean version.
