04:33:57<@JAA>Yeah, I wanted to rerun RHDN recently, but their download system works very differently from when I grabbed it a few years ago.
04:35:16<immibis>re archiving lots of videos with low value, of course one idea (which is presumably not tolerable for archiveteam/internet archive) is to just archive the 240p version. Then it's a substantially lower amount of data, but also not a particularly good archive, just a cromulent one.

04:41:47<immibis>you can probably archive whatever channel you want in 240p or 144p all by yourself, it's that much less
04:43:12<immibis>I've said that the future will involve information consumers' LLMs summarising things that have been padded out by producers' LLMs to fit some arbitrary word count - is that basically what we're already doing with video content that could have been an article?

22:55:39<eightthree>what about if we had really good speech to text tool to keep mostly that and 144p or 240p of the videos (or no video, maybe just audio, something is better than nothing)
22:56:17<immibis>we do have one, that google automatically runs on all videos
22:56:28<immibis>it's even pretty good at translating between languages
22:57:43<immibis>there's no good answer to the question of what to archive. If you want to know what happened, text newspapers will do that. If you want to know what propaganda was spread, you need it in the same format, because translating propaganda to another format changes its effect.
22:58:50<immibis>and the same stuff isn't always available in all formats; there are a lot of left-wing independent people on youtube or twitch propagating news with a left spin; they only do this on youtube or twitch and don't also have websites with articles. i imagine tiktok has something similar.
