23:28:29<tachymelia>heyo, like 8 years ago I archived a few old minecraftforum threads. it was really shittily done with like three separate wget invocations at two separate times. I managed to bootleg some manual edits to fix the html query links and missing script tags, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for how to comprehensively fix shit?
23:29:29<tachymelia>all I really care about is the posts, and I can't just take another archive because about 100 pages worth of posts have since disappeared due to mcforums collapsing
23:29:46<pokechu22>The main trick archiveteam uses is generating WARC files, and then web.archive.org does the URL rewriting automatically :)
23:29:55<pokechu22>but of course you can't really travel back in time and capture the posts you want as WARC
23:30:40<pokechu22>that said archiveteam did a grab in 2019: https://archive.org/details/archiveteam_minecraftforums (which is also browsable by web.archive.org)
23:31:00<tachymelia>yeah that's the main issue. my current idea is manually running sed to fix up interpage nav links, then run the whole thing through another wget pass in a local webserver
23:31:02<tachymelia>oh my god????
23:31:26<tachymelia>hot damn thank you imma check that
23:31:45<pokechu22>Whatever you do, make sure to keep a copy of the unmodified/minimally modified ones as well just in case you mess something up
23:32:07<tachymelia>yep, ofc! thank ya so much :)
23:33:35<pokechu22>Also, I haven't been following it closely, but I'm not aware of any systemic deletions of posts on the forums - but there is a thing where they renamed some subforums (e.g. mapping-and-modding became mapping-and-modding-java-edition) and although it's *supposed* to redirect old URLs to the new ones that doesn't always work (something like it doesn't work when you're not
23:33:37<pokechu22>signed in, or maybe when you are signed in)
23:33:59<tachymelia>ugh looks like all the post deletion happened before 2019
23:34:02<tachymelia>oh it's posts in a single thread
23:34:24<tachymelia>the thing I'm looking at is https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/off-topic/forum-games/435676-destroy-the-godmodder-2-operator - used to have more than 1337 pages, now 1257
23:36:28<pokechu22>https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/off-topic/forum-games/435676-* might also help a bit but probably not that much
23:37:20<thuban>tachymelia: it's a one-man project still in alpha, and i expect you would have to hack it up to get it to accept your html files instead of doing its own scraping, but https://github.com/mikwielgus/forum-dl might be helpful
23:37:23<pokechu22>there's also e.g. https://web.archive.org/web/2014*/https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/off-topic/forum-games/435676-* but it seems like captures before 2019 are pretty sparse
23:39:41<pokechu22>but based on https://web.archive.org/web/20190116102442/https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/off-topic/forum-games/435676-destroy-the-godmodder-2-operator it only had 1258 pages at the time archiveteam captured it

23:40:37<tachymelia>thuban that looks really promising thank you!!
23:41:36<tachymelia>pokechu22 yeah, sadly. it looks like some previous archives did happen before the page deletions happened, but the posts are spread around so it'd have to be comprehensive. still, knowing the 2019 one exists is v nice
